Rechargeable batteries
A few words about Lithium battery technology.
Lithium batteries in common use appeared in the 90s, or more than 100 years after lead-acid batteries. Initially, SONY used them in its portable equipment. Quite quickly they became popular and today they are widely used in consumer electronics such as: tablets, telephones, laptops, cameras, toys, etc. Today, this technology is constantly developed and practically functioning without Lithium batteries is impossible. There are many types of lithium batteries, including: Li-ion, Li-poly, LiFePo4, LTO etc.
Each of the above-mentioned batteries has its advantages and disadvantages. The two most important issues are:
Protection of cells / accumulators against extreme situations - complete discharging, overloading, short circuit. This is the basis of every Lithium battery. For this purpose, a protective system - BMS is used. Its task is to control the battery operation. It controls voltage on individual cells of the battery, balances the cells to equal voltages, cuts the power supply in case of too low / high voltage and short circuit. Thus, it makes the battery exploitation safe and maintains battery parameters in the standard.
Charging the battery - it is imperative to use chargers for a given type of battery or charging controllers! You can not use for this purpose an ordinary car charger, alternator or charging with outboard engines. This is caused by the charging process and various voltages of lithium cells. For example, a single LiFePo4 link is charged to 3.7V max, and the minimum operating value is 2.0V. For Li-ion, these values are 4.2 V max and unload to 2,75V.
Li-ion / Lipoly - the highest energy density W / kg, light, high discharging currents up to 30 times the capacity, high voltage of a single cell – 3.7V.
Disadvantages: very unstable at critical moments. That is, they can ignite, explode when reloaded, discharges below the permissible level, mechanical damage. Number of charge / discharge cycles around 500. To this value the cells maintain their capacity at a level not less than 80% of the rated capacity.
LiFePo4 - (Lithium-iron-phosphate battery)
The most stable type of Lithium batteries, do not burn, do not explode. Number of charge / discharge cycles not less than 2000 !, lifetime 10 years. High energy density - however lower than in Li-ion W / kg. Discharge currents from 1C-10C (depending on the type of cells). They are more than half lighter than lead-acid batteries. 100Ah / 12V weighs about 12.5kg. They do not have the memory effect - they can be easily recharged. In contrast to acid batteries, LiFePo4 does not have the effect of decreasing the capacity with the load current. They can work in any position. Not all manufacturers give the battery capacity in the battery datasheets in relation to the load.
The principle of administering the magical number C20 is widely accepted and used. In short, it means that a given battery is able to give away all the stored energy in 20 hours. And here the problems begin, for example:
The battery Tb Pb 12V / 100Ah weight 31kg (below the table with the manufacturer's data) will give the whole 102AH in 20H, in five hours only 85AH. Shorter times, eg 1 or 2 hours are not given. However, looking at the manufacturer's specifications, it will probably be around 60-70 Ah. Thus, at high currents, we lose even 1/3 of the capacity! It is worth noting that the battery, taken for example, is a well-known and appreciated company. Where the components and workmanship is at a very high level.
Another issue is the work and purpose of the battery. First of all batteries for working with large currents, deep discharge - traction are EXPENSIVE! Very often the price of such a 100Ah / 12V battery varies between 1000 PLN-2000 PLN. Cheaper batteries are usually only with traction names…
Let's compare the acid batteries to LiFePo4
Weight: 12V / 100Ah Lifepo4 - 12,5kg vs acidic 12V/100Ah 31kg
Capacity: LiFePo4 12V/100Ah C1 - 100AH vs acidic about 60-70AH
Position of work: LiFePo4 - any vs acidic determined
Lifetime: LiFePo4 not less than 2000 COD vs acidic 800
Protection: LiFePo4 - BMS vs acidic - NONE
